Rosserhead Debarkers
Rosserhead Debarkers
The BE&E Rosserhead Debarker was initially developed for use in hardwood veneer mills, where log values are very high and therefore log yield is critical. Previous Rosserhead Debarkers were too aggressive and uncontrolled so that too much damage was done to the outer log surface. Veneer mills also place value on a very clean and smooth outer surface so that no dirt is carried to the knife at the veneer machine.
These same values carry to the hardwood sawmill as well.

Debarking Principle and Features
- The basic unit features a single debarking arm that is hydraulically controlled.
- Using hydraulics allows us to adjust the down pressure precisely according to the bark type.
- The debarking head is mounted to the arm with rubber mounts to isolate vibration.
- The head rotates to accurately follow the log shape and features a rotation lock to prevent penciling the log ends.
- The debarking head uses angled carbide cutter turning at high speed to cut the bark off rather than beat it off as other designs do.
- This cutting process gives the advantage of working well with difficult stringy barks such as hickory and basswood.
- The cutterhead is also very effective at cutting off protruding knots and bumps.
- The logs rotate on variable speed bull wheels that are mounted on rubber blocks to reduce shock to the frame.
Our system utilizes an overhead carriage to position the debarking head over the log. This gives the advantage of being able to eject the log immediately at the end of debarking without consideration of the carriage position.
The Process
The process begins with a log being fed into the unit by log deck, step feeder or other form of singular feed. The operator positions the debarking head over the starting end of the log, starts the bull wheel rotation and lowers the head onto the log with the pivot of the head locked until the head is fully over the log. He can then unlock the head to allow pivoting to follow the log shape.
The operator will adjust the log rotation speed and the carriage speed to optimize bark removal and processing speed.
Specifications:
- Log diameters ————–up to 36” standard, 48” by request
- Log lengths —————–up to 17’ standard, custom length by request
- Production —————–up to 1 logs per minute, depending on log roughness
For hardwood mills:
- Cleaner debarking with no bumps results in better scans for the headrig.
- Cleaner debarking results in longer saw life.
- Increased lumber yields due to removing only the bark.
- No ringing or gouging.
- No penciled log ends.
- Very long debarker life due to vibration and shock damping.
